WoW Shadowlands Legendaries – A Complete Step by Step Guide!

by Zaraki Kenpachi

Welcome to our complete guide on WoW Shadowlands Legendaries! Here we will take a look at the Legendary Item system and how you can collect, craft, and upgrade Legendaries in WoW Shadowlands. And by the end of this post, you will learn everything you need to know about Legendary Items in this expansion, and you will have no problem getting them!

Legendaries in WoW Shadowlands may seem confusing a bit since, for the first time, we don’t loot them from raid bosses, but instead, we craft them ourselves. There is a special currency connected with Legendaries, and all players can farm it on a daily basis. Legendaries are one of the main features of WoW Shadowlands, and even if you’re just a casual player, you’ll still need to get it for your character! That said, let’s see what exactly are Legendary Items in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands!

Our complete guide on WoW Shadowlands Legendaries
A complete guide to the Legendary System in WoW Shadowlands

What Are WoW Shadowlands Legendaries?

Legendaries are the central powers of every character in WoW Shadowlands. They’re the highest item-level pieces of gear that we can get and the most powerful ones. Compared to the regular items, Legendaries provide a special effect on top of all the extra stats like Intellect, Agility, Critical Strike, or Stamina. And this effect can massively change how a class or a spec is played during the expansion.

WoW Shadowlands Legendaries come in three groups:

  • General Legendary Items – available to all classes and specializations in the game.
  • Class-specific Legendary Items – available to one class, no matter which specialization is favored.
  • Specialization-specific Legendary Items – available to only one specialization of one class.

Now, the real reason why these three groups of Legendaries exist is because of their usefulness and targeted gameplay. The General Legendary Items, which can be crafted by everyone, are meant to help you out in The Maw, Torghast, or while completing tasks in the open world.

But the Class-specific Legendaries can tremendously boost your character’s power and are available for all specializations of that class. For example, out of all WoW Shadowlands Legendaries that Mages can craft for PvP, the best one is [Triune Ward]. This is a Legendary power that allows Mages to cast one more type of barrier from their other two specializations for 65% effectiveness. And if it’s equipped, a Fire Mage will always cast either a [Prismatic Barrier] from the Arcane specialization or an [Ice Barrier] from the Frost specialization. As you might imagine, this is a very powerful defensive option for Mages in PvP because they double their shield value every 25 seconds.

The Specialization-specific Legendaries are similar in this sense. They offer power boosts for only one spec, but they can be very impactful on how you play that spec.

Why Are Legendary Items So Important?

Legendary Items aren’t the only new power source in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands. There are also Covenant Abilities which are unique to every class and granted by your chosen covenant. Covenant Abilities are the most important powers in the game currently, and rightfully so. But why are Legendaries on that same pedestal?

Well, Legendary Items connect different power sources of your character and are used to synergize multiple things. And the perfect example for this is Balance Druid.

Among the best WoW Shadowlands Legendaries for Balance Druid is [Balance of All Things]. The tooltip for the effect is pretty simple: Entering Eclipse increases your critical strike chance with Arcane or Nature spells by 40%, decreasing by 8% every 1 sec. This may not seem game-changing at all. But once you understand how this effect can impact Moonkins, you’ll realize how overpowered it really is.

The best covenant choice for Balance Druid by far is Night Fae. This grants them the [Convoke the Spirits] ability, which is pretty strong itself. Here is what it does: Call upon the Night Fae for an eruption of energy, channeling a rapid flurry of 16 Druid spells and abilities over 4 sec.

Now, Balance Druids have one more weapon in their arsenal – [Celestial Alignment] or [Incarnation: Chosen of Elune]: Celestial bodies align, maintaining both Eclipses and granting 10% haste for 20 sec. And does this synergize with the rest?

Well, whenever a Balance Druid with the Balance of All Things activates his Celestial Alignment, he gets an 80% flat Critical chance. But in reality, this is a near 100% Critical Strike chance because of all additional stats. This then opens an opportunity for Moonkins to use their Convoke the Spirits. And this ability will channel 16 spells with a 100% Critical Strike chance at their enemy in 4 seconds. Not to mention that this can be sped up by haste buffs such as [Heroism] or [Time Warp].

Thanks to this combination of sources, and some conduit powers that we didn’t mention, Balance Druids hold the highest burst in the game currently. Their DPS potential during their first few seconds of Celestial Alignment and Convoke the Spirits is unmatched. And the piece that holds all of this together is their Legendary Item – Balance of All Things.

Of course, some classes and specialization don’t have such a high level of synergy with their Legendaries. However, the fact remains that your Legendary Items is the central power of your character.

Just take a look at what a Balance Druid can do in PvP environments thanks to Balance of All Things:

How to Start with Legendary Items in WoW Shadowlands?

If you are a new player or you’ve just come back to WoW from previous expansions, here is what you need to know.

The way you unlock WoW Shadowlands Legendaries is by completing the max-level content. Upon reaching level 60, the game will present to you the four covenants, and you’ll have to make a choice. And your chosen covenant will give you a campaign of 9 chapters, aka questlines. The second chapter of each covenant’s storyline is your introduction to The Maw and Torghast, the Tower of the Damned

The quest will first take you into The Maw, where you’ll encounter Ve’nari, your friendly NPC in the zone. And continuing the quests with Ve’nari, you’ll enter Torghast, where you’ll meet the Runecarver. The Runecarver is the NPC responsible for crafting the Legendaries for you, so you’ll have to make friends with him too. In the end, you’ll have to collect a Legendary Power and restore the Runecarver’s memory for that Legendary Power. And that is what will grant you access to crafting Legendary Items.

Don’t worry; the game itself will guide you through every step. It’s practically impossible to miss this questline because you can’t progress further without completing it first. It’s made so every player has to go through it, so you’ll have no problem unlocking WoW Shadowlands Legendaries.

But that’s only the beginning. There are many more things you should do before you can craft your first Legendary Item!

How to Craft WoW Shadowlands Legendaries?

To craft Legendaries in WoW Shadowlands, you’re going to need:

  • Legendary Powers
  • Base Items
  • Missives
  • Soul Ash

Legendary Powers

What are Legendary Powers?

Well, they are the actual effects of the Legendaries. They are the Runcerver’s lost memories which we will have to collect and restore back for him. And there are currently a total of 16 for every class in the game. There are 8 General Legendary Powers, 4 Class-specific Legendary Powers, and 4 Specialization-specific Legendary Powers.

How do you get Legendary Powers?

You can loot Legendary Powers from all types of content. Every individual Legendary Power comes from a different source. For example, the [Windspeeker’s Lava Resurgence] Legendary Power, which is currently the best Legendary for Elemental Shaman, can be looted from the World Boss Valinor, the Light of Eons. This boss spawns once a month and stays up for a week. And if you miss the week he’s currently up, you’ll have to wait a month to get this Legendary Power.

On the other hand, we have Legendaries like the Mage’s Triune Ward that we mentioned above. That and similar PvP-related Legendary Powers for all classes can be purchased by the PvP vendors in Oribos. Other Powers can be collected from dungeon and raid bosses. The WoW Shadowlands Legendaries drop rate is actually near 100%, so everyone can loot their favorite Legendary Powers as long as they complete the required content.

Base Items

The base items are the actual pieces of gear that you can put the Legendary effect on. Every Legendary Power can be attached to one of two offered slots of gear. For example, the Windspeaker’s Lava Resurgence Legendary can be crafted with either a Back (cloak) item or a Feet (boots) item. This means that you can choose which one of these slots you’ll cover with your Legendary Item.

Now, the base items aren’t regular items either. These are new types of armor that you can craft with the professions in Shadowlands. Here is how it works:

  • Tailoring – crafts the base items for the Cloth classes: Mage, Priest, and Warlock.
  • Leatherworking – crafts the base items for Leather and Mail classes: Demon Hunter, Druid, Rogue, Monk, Shaman, and Hunter.
  • Blacksmithing – crafts the base items for the Plate classes: Death Knight, Warrior, and Paladin.
  • Jewelcrafting – crafts the base items for the Neck and Ring slots for all classes.

While these four professions are the primary way of crafting the base items for Legendaries in Shadowlands, they require materials from the rest of the professions too. Enchanting, Alchemy, Mining, Herbalism, and Skinning all provide the necessary reagents for the four crafting professions mentioned above.

If you don’t craft the base items yourself, then you’ll have to buy them from the Auction House. Currently, Legendary base items are expensive, so you can make tons of WoW gold by selling them. We have extended guides on how to utilize all professions, so make sure you check them too.

Here is the WoW Shadowlands Legendaries appearance for all armor types:

Missives

What are Missives?

Missives are consumables that are required for crafting every Legendary Item. Inscription is the profession responsible for creating the Missives, which can be of four types: Missive of Critical Strike, Missive of Versatility, Missive of Haste, and Missive of Mastery. These Missives add bonus stats to your Legendary Item. And the fact that we can choose which stats to get is great!

When you go to craft your Legendary, the Runecarver will demand from you two different Missives. Your job will be to acquire them by either creating them yourself or purchasing them with gold. And depending on your class and specialization, you should combine them accordingly. In the end, you can slot the two chosen Missives in your Legendary Item while crafting it.

Soul Ash

The Legendary system in Shadowlands is deeply connected with Torghast. The reason for this is because the primary currency that you need for crafting Legendaries is Soul Ash, which can ONLY be acquired by completing different wings in Torghast! We have an in-depth guide on Torghast as a feature in World of Warcraft and how you can defeat it with all classes, so make sure to check it out too!

Here is how much WoW Shadowlands Legendaries cost:

  • Rank 1 – 1250 Soul Ash – 190 ilvl.
  • Rank 2 – 2000 Soul Ash – 210 ilvl.
  • Rank 3 – 3200 Soul Ash – 225 ilvl.
  • Rank 4 – 5150 Soul Ash – 235 ilvl.

Now, you can upgrade WoW Shadowlands Legendaries once you collect enough Soul Ash for it.  The cost here depends on which rank your Legendary is and which rank you want to upgrade it to.

The only setback you can have with Legendaries this expansion is that the limitation of farming Soul Ash. There is a cap on how much you can get at once. Each week, you can farm up to 1140 Soul Ash for crafting WoW Shadowlands Legendaries from the two available wings of Torghast on layer 8. However, you can collect up to 1250 Soul Ash in your first week, thanks to the introductory quests we mentioned above. And that will be enough for you to craft rank 1 of your first Legendary Item.

What Are the Best WoW Shadowlands Legendaries?

When it comes to deciding on which Legendary Power to spend your Soul Ash on, many things need to be considered. There is a clear winner for each class and specialization, based on the performance and numbers in either PvE or PvP environment. However, the truth is that Legendaries are personal things, and you should choose the one that matches your gameplay. For example, if your Balance Druid hasn’t chosen the Night Fae covenant, you don’t have to go for the Balance of All Things Legendary.

But if you want to maximize your character’s potential by getting the best possible Legendary Item, then stick around! We’ll create guides on choosing the best Legendaries for each class and specialization. So check back in a week or two to see what you should be crafting for your own character!

Conclusion

To summarize things up, you need four ingredients to craft WoW Shadowlands Legendaries: a Legendary Power, a base item, two Missives, and enough Soul Ash. Soul Ash is the only time-gated ingredient, so clearing Torghast should be your priority every week.
